Brochure on Sámi Traditional Cultural Expressions

On behalf of Sámi Duodji, the Sámi Handicraft Foundation, we have produced the brochure Obligations and Rights within Duodji. The brochure contains information aimed at the Sámi community and practitioners of Sámi traditions, with guidance intended to support them. Its purpose is to assist Sámi artisans and creators of duodji, Sámi handicraft, by clarifying concepts such as copyright, design protection, copying, and plagiarism.

The brochure is also directed at those who wish to engage with Sámi culture, for example by purchasing handicrafts or using Sámi expressions in their business activities. It addresses the issue of cultural appropriation and provides guidance on determining whether, and if so how, Sámi culture may be used by non-Sámi individuals.

Consultation Guide and Strategy Guide

On behalf of the Sámi reindeer herding communities (samebyar) Laevas and Gabna, through their project Min Ođđa Giron, we have developed two publications: the Consultation Guide and the Strategy Guide.

The Consultation Guide contains tips and advice for Sámi representatives participating in various meetings with companies or public authorities. With practical checklists, an overview of the most common types of meetings, and a compilation of key legislation, it serves as a useful tool.

The Strategy Guide provides advice for Sámi representatives on how to conduct more effective negotiations, covering everything from the initial analysis of a counterpart to when and how to best conclude a negotiation.

These guides have also led to the delivery of training sessions, likewise commissioned by the Min Ođđa Giron project, in Gällivare and Östersund. In Luleå, we conducted a training session based on the Consultation Guide on behalf of the Sámi Parliament (Sametinget).

Together with six other Indigenous experts, and as the sole representative of the Arctic region, Reakta AB’s Rebecka Ekberg participated in a workshop organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations.

The workshop was conducted on behalf of WIPO’s Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore. The purpose of the workshop was to contribute to the development of the international legal system in which Indigenous traditions, knowledge, expressions, and other rights are respected globally.

The outcome was a report that was presented at a subsequent committee meeting.

The Sámi Cultural Bus Julla Májja

The Sámi cultural bus Julla Májja travels between eight inland municipalities to promote and strengthen Sámi culture and language. Reakta’s Rebecka joined the bus on visits to two locations, Tärnaby and Storuman, where she gave lectures on Sámi culture and how it can be protected.
