Rebecka Ekberg
As a specialist in indigenous rights and intellectual property, my background includes working for the UN specialized agency the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and advocating for human rights with the international organization Civil Rights Defenders.
These roles have provided me with a deep understanding of global negotiations and firsthand experience in:
- Designing and leading workshops and training programs for Indigenous Peoples, governments and representatives from different industries.
- Assisting governments in drafting national legislation and companies in strategic policy making.
- Organize international negotiations involving States, Indigenous Peoples, and interest organizations.
Through my international work, I have built a broad professional circle involving indigenous leaders, UN officials, and government representatives. I leverage my knowledge of global legal frameworks and best practices to deliver the most effective, tailored solutions for Reakta’s clients.
Purpose and Sámi Engagement
At the core of my work is a commitment to assisting the Sámi people in protecting and advancing their human rights. My goal is to strengthen human rights knowledge within the Sámi community through dedicated legal support and training.
My commitment extends beyond legal frameworks:
- Project Management: I have gained valuable experience through both voluntary work in Sámi organizations and larger assignments for Sámi communities, which have included project management, fundraising, and financial responsibility.
- Advocacy: I ensure Sámi voices are heard during legal negotiations and the development of new policies at national, European, and international levels. My work focuses on bridging knowledge gaps, ensuring that both Swedish and international actors – as well as the Sámi community itself – fully understand the laws that impact our people.
- Practical Insight: As a member of the Sámi community with years of experience serving our local associations, I don’t just study these issues – I live them. I use this firsthand insight to ensure that dialogue between our community and external actors is built on genuine understanding and mutual respect.
Reakta is the direct result of my passion for Sámi rights – this is a platform where I can give back to and amplify the community that has supported me.
